The Captain was born in Boston in 1797. He and his sister were quickly orphaned, and young William was parentless by the time he was 9 years old.
As an adult, William Goodwin was a sea captain, and visited lands all over the globe. He stopped in the Sandwich Islands before settling on the Dana Adobe property in 1825. He married Maria Josefa, with whom he had 21 children (13 of them lived to adulthood). He is also the cousin of the famed Richard Henry Dana, after whom Dana Point is named.
There are several excellent biographies on Captain William Goodwin Dana that can help you learn more about him, his family, and his contributions to California.
