Dana Adobe receives preservation award
On June 21, the Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos (DANA) were honored by the California Heritage Council for their efforts in restoring and preserving the historic Dana Adobe. The award was given to DANA Executive Director Kathy Kubiak by CHC President John Hodges in a ceremony held at the Presidio in San Francisco.
The California Heritage Council was formed in the early 1960’s by a number of Architects, Conservationist and Historians, during the development of the interstate highway system. Extraordinary pressure was put on cities to give up older buildings and areas to the meet the need for more freeways and parking facilities. The CHC was instrumental in diverting a proposed superhighway through California’s historic gold country, thus saving many historic buildings that would have been demolished. The CHC soon expanded its scope to include Butte County, the Mother Lode and then all of California and continues today to honor individuals, organizations as well as communities for their part in the preservation of California’s historic sites.
